Chicago, Ill. - Freshman Nicole Robinson's two-out RBI single in the bottom of third inning proved to be the game-winner as UIC edged Youngstown State, 3-2, in the first contest of a three-game set this weekend at Flames Field.

The Flames are now 21-16, 1-0 in Horizon League play with the win while the Penguins fall to 11-14, 1-2.

Junior pitcher Brittany McIntyre out-dueled Youngstown State hurler Kelly Murphy to earn her ninth victory.

McIntyre allowed two runs on six hits while fanning five in seven innings to move to 9-8 on the year.

Murphy, meanwhile, was the tough-luck loser, surrendering three runs on seven hits. She retired the last nine batters she faced.

UIC got on the board right away, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning off Murphy.

Senior Cameron Astiazaran led off the frame with a single and then back-to-back RBI doubles by freshman Brittany Dixon and senior Sara Hernandez gave the Flames a 2-0 lead.

Youngstown State knotted the score in the top of the third on a run-scoring single by Sara Berry and an RBI groundout by Sarah Conklin.

UIC took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out single by rookie Robinson, which plated junior Nicole Shepard from second base.

Game two of the series is set for this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
