Softball Blanks Charlotte, 5-0, In First Game Of Afternoon Doubleheader|
March 22, 2005
Charlotte, N.C. - Junior Brittany McIntyre was masterful in the circle on Tuesday afternoon, tossing a one-hit shutout as the UIC softball team notched its eighth straight victory with a 5-0 triumph over Charlotte in game one of a doubleheader at the Phillips Complex.
The Flames moved above .500 with the victory, now sitting at 16-15 on the year. The 49ers dropped to 10-19-1 with the loss.
McIntyre, who leveled her season record at 7-7, allowed a single to Evan Miller to lead off the contest and then proceeded to set down 21 of the next 22 batters she faced. A third inning walk to Miller was the only other blemish on a near-perfect day for McIntyre.
The contest was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when senior Cameron Astiazaran singled to score junior Michelle Miller, who had led off the frame with a single and been pushed to second on a sacrifices bunt by junior Joyce Cathey.
The Flames added to their lead in the sixth inning, capitalizing on two 49er miscues for three runs and a 4-0 lead. McIntyre helped her own cause with an RBI single in frame while Astiazaran notched her second run-scoring single.
In the seventh, UIC plated its final run on a single by freshman Nikki Rogers.
Kristen Bowen was the losing pitcher for Charlotte, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits, and is now 7-10 this season.
