SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UIC softball team closed out the first day of the San Diego Classic tournament Friday night with a 8-7, extra inning loss to host San Diego.

After being shut out in the tournament opener against UMass, the Flames (6-15) jumped out to a two-run lead in the first off a double from Claire Donyanavard.

Ina very back-and-forth affair, the Toreros put up four runs between the second and fourth innings off of six hits and a miscue by the Flames outfield.

But UIC answered back in the fifth with a two-out, four run onslaught. Three consecutive hits from Carly DeMarco, Coryn Schmit and Teresa Aguilar would put the Flames ahead by a 6-4 margin.

Stephanie Chavez would put up another run in the sixth, opening the inning with a single up the middle. Shannon Kehr would follow suit with a single to left center, and a sac bunt from Brooke Frydendall moved Chavez to third. An error from San Diego's third basemen would give the Flames their final run of the night for a 7-4 lead.

Down to their final out in the top of the seventh with two on, Toreros Taylor Hensley tied things up with a three-run homer to force the game into extra innings.

Utilizing the international run rule, the Toreros opened the eighth with a runner at second. An infield error would move the runner to third and an outfield single would give San Diego the go-ahead run for an 8-7 lead.

With Frydendall opening the bottom of the eighth on second, a passed ball would move her to third for a chance to level the game at eight. But a strikeout, flyout and infield ground-out would close out the game in favor of the home team, leaving the Flames with their fifth extra inning loss of the season.

UIC put up their highest hit count of the season with 14, as all but two starters picked up hits in the contest.

The Flames will face a pair of Big 12 foes on Saturday, beginning with Texas A&M at 1:30 p.m. CST, followed by a rematch against Kansas at 4:00.
