Softball Goes Undefeated On First Day Of Play At Wolfpack Challenge
March 19, 2005 Raleigh, N.C. - The UIC softball team opened its six-day spring trip through North Carolina with a pair of wins on Friday, edging Central Connecticut State, 3-2, before getting past Canisius, 6-2, in pool play at the 2005 Wolfpack Challenge hosted by North Carolina State University. The Flames (10-15) are now in first place in Pool 3 with a 2-0 record and are just one of three undefeated squads in the 13-team event. UIC will conclude pool play tomorrow afternoon when they meet UNC Wilmington. In their opening game of the day, the Flames trailed 2-0 through four innings before rallying back with three runs in the fifth for the 3-2 victory over Central Connecticut State. Freshman Brittany Dixon provided the power the Flames needed with a three-run homer in the innings. The win snapped a stretch of four straight defeats in one-run contests. The Blue Devils fell to 1-4 on the year with the loss. Versus Akron, UIC used a five-run fifth inning, which featured a two-run homer by Joyce Cathey and a two-run double by Lauren Brennan, to get past the Zips, 6-2.
