BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UIC softball team (11-11/0-0 Horizon) defeated Central Michigan, 1-0, before dropping to Michigan State, 11-3, in the second day of play at the Hoosier Classic at the IU Softball Field in Bloomington, Ind.

    GAME ONE

In a game that consisted of a battle of defense with only 11 combined hits among the two teams, junior Melissa Preish (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had three hits with three at-bats in the contest to lead all players.

The Flames totaled seven hits to Central Michigan’s four. In addition to Preish, other UIC members chipping in include Coryn Schmit (Hawthorn Hills, Ill./Lake Zurich), Teresa Aguilar (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), Kelsey Sturgeon (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and freshman Erica Hampton (Wichita, Kan./Bishop Carroll).

Junior Courtney Heeley (Glendale, Ariz./Greenway) posted the sole UIC RBI of the contest. The Flames scored in the top of the fifth inning to secure the winning run over Central Michigan.

    GAME TWO

The Flames gained the early lead in the contest as sophomore Jacki Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) singled, before Hewett hit a home run to left center field to place two runs on the board.

Kara Komp (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) singled, before Sturgeon laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Komp to second base. Aguilar then doubled to right-center field to score Komp for the Flames final run of the contest.

The Flames effort fell short as the Spartans run-ruled UIC in an 11-3 outcome.

The Flames return to action Sunday versus Indiana at 3:45 p.m. (CT) to conclude the Hoosier Classic.
