TUCSON - The UIC softball team closed out the second day of the Wildcat Invitational with a 6-3 victory over Creighton Saturday evening.

The Flames (6-12) continued their winning ways after defeating Northern Colorado earlier in the afternoon.

UIC opened the game with a two out homer from Brooke Frydendall which drove in Stephanie Chavez for a 2-0 lead. The Flames would tack on a run in the second after a hit, a sac bunt and an error got Carly DeMarco home.

Shannon Kehr opened the third with her first career triple, and Frydendall would bring her in with a double out to the left field wall. A sacrifice flyout from Coryn Schmit would bring in Frydendall, extending the Flames lead to five.

Pitcher Ashley Hewett kept the Bluejays hitless through four until firstbasemen Renae Sinkler hit a home run just over the right field wall. With a runner on, Creighton looked poised to score more in the fourth, but a running snowcone grab from Melinda Macias capped off the inning with a 5-1 UIC lead.

An infield error after a single from Chavez, followed by a double to the left field wall by Frydendall would be enough base moment to let Chavez score amidst a infield error to extend the Flames lead to five for a 6-1 contest.

Creighton was not ready to leave Hillenbrand Stadium quietly, scoring a pair of runs with the bases remaining loaded in the bottom of the seventh. But Hewett got the final out of the game with the batter looking; closing things out with the Flames second win of the day.

"It was great to get two wins today and see a lot of good things happening," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "It was a great team effort all the way around." Frydendall would go 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and the homer, and Hewett would fan seven in the four-hitter.
