March 10, 2013
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The UIC softball team (3-15) out-hit Wisconsin 11-7 Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium during the final day of the Saluki Invitational. Despite the effort, the Badgers captured the game, 2-1 in eight innings, while the final game against Southern Illinois was rained out.
Freshman Laura Swan earned three hits as the designated hitter, while shortstop and lead-off batter Natalie Hernandez and second baseman Jacki Fletcher both had two hits. Junior Jenna Marsalli captured the sole RBI for the Flames.
Senior Devin Miller started inside the circle for UIC and in eight innings of work she blanked six batters and allowed only seven hits to Wisconsin’s pitcher Cassandra Darrah’s 11.
With the game scoreless at the bottom of the seventh inning, the teams moved in to the eighth inning using the international tie-breaker rule. Wisconsin’s Shannel Blackshear was the last out of the seventh inning, so she was placed on second and replaced with pinch runner Megan Tancill. Michelle Mueller then hit a double to left-centerfield to score Tancill and jump out to a 2-1 lead.
The Flames were unable to produce a run in the bottom half of the frame and the Badgers claimed a 2-1 victory.
UIC concludes its pre-season tournament schedule at the three-day Hoosier Invitational that begins Friday against Central Michigan at 12:45 p.m. (CT).
