CARBONDALE, Ill. - The UIC softball team was unable to cap off the Coach B Classic with a victory, falling to host Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

The Flames (4-10) were unable to defeat Western Illinois earlier in the day in a 3-1 loss. The squad now prepares for the Wildcat Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona next weekend on March 12-14.

    Western Illinois 3, UIC 1
The Flames would ultimately strand six baserunners in a contest that saw the Leathernecks strike in the bottom of the third after a pair of infield errors gave Western two unearned runs.

WIU would strike again in the following inning, capitalizing off of a stolen base and two singles to extend the lead to three.

UIC cut the Leathernecks lead in the sixth with a two-out single from Kelsey Sturgeon that allowed pinch runner Kara Komp to score from second. Teresa Aguilar would move Sturgeon to second with an outfield single, but that's as far as the Flames would advance as the inning came to a close one batter later, and ran out of chances in the seventh.

Leadoff hitter Carly DeMarco went 2-for-4 in the first contest of the day, while Devin Miller fanned four batters with a lone earned run in the loss.

    Southern Illinois 7, UIC 0
The last meeting between the two teams saw the Flames best the Salukis in five innings in Miami on February 12 in a 9-1 UIC win.

The final contest of the Coach B Classic would go very differently, as host SIU would jump out to a four-run lead after a two-out grand slam from catcher Christina Trapani in the first inning.

Southern would strike again in the fourth and the sixth, accruing three more runs for the final tally. Pitcher Danielle Glosson struck out nine batters, surrendering a mere three hits against UIC, who were limited to a trio of runners in scoring position.
