Clearwater, Fla. - The UIC softball team finished the 2004 Speedline Invitational in impressive fashion on Sunday, tallying a pair of wins en route to the 5th-Place Pool title at the EC Moore Complex.

The Flames (7-13) opened the day with a 7-5 victory over Jacksonville, then capped the tournament with a 5-4 come-from-behind triumph over in-state rival Northern Illinois.

UIC concluded the Speedline Invite with a 4-3 record, going 2-3 in pool play, then advancing to the fifth-place bracket where they posted a 2-0 mark on Sunday.

In the tournament finale, the Flames found themselves down by a pair of runs on two occasions and battled back both times for a hard-fought 5-4 victory.

UIC trailed 2-0 in the fourth inning when junior Sara Hernandez evened the score with a two-run homer, her first of the season.

After Northern Illinois posted another two runs to take a 4-2 advantage, the Flames mounted their final rally in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Nicole Shepard got the scoring going with an RBI double, then with UIC down to its final out sophomore Joyce Cathey roped a two-run double to give her team a 5-4 lead.

Rookie Chelsey Barlcay (1-3) then took care of the rest for the Flames, shutting down the Huskies in the seventh for her first career win.
