Softball Closes Out Weekend With 9-1 Loss At 10th-Ranked Oklahoma
March 6, 2011
NORMAN, Okla. - The UIC softball team wrapped up its four-game weekend in Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to No. 10 Sooners at the OU Softball Complex.
The Flames (5-9) would fall behind from the get-go as OU pounced out to a 4-0 lead in the first after a string of walks and an infield error. UIC would chip into their host's lead in the top of the second as Courtney Heeley would score amidst an outfield single from Melinda Macias, her seventh RBI of the year to give the Sooners a 4-1 advantage.
"Offensively, we had some opportunities throughout today's contest," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "We're doing good things but we just need to work on our timeliness and getting everything working at once."
OU would respond in the bottom of the second as a double would be followed by a sac fly to extend the Sooners lead back to four, 5-1.
Devin Miller would clamp down on any chances for the next three innings, allowing only a pair of hits in the third, fourth and fifth frames.
But the home team would put the game out of reach in the sixth with four runs off three singles and a pair of doubles to close the game out with the eight-run advantage.
"While it's not how we wanted to end the weekend, we saw some very good things from the team. We're looking forward to getting back out on the road next weekend at Southern Illinois."
The Flames return to action in the Land of Lincoln, squaring off against in state foes SIU and DePaul at the Saluki Invitational next weekend, March 12-13 in Carbondale. UIC will face each team once on Saturday and again on Sunday, starting off against the Blue Demons on Saturday at 11 a.m.
