Clearwater, Fla. -The UIC softball team remained undefeated at the 2004 Speedline Invitational with a dramatic 2-1, eight-inning victory over Mercer on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Flames (5-10) are one of three undefeated teams in Pool A at the four-day event, joining #22 South Florida and Purdue. The Bears (10-12), meanwhile, are now 0-2 in pool play.

With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of eighth inning, junior Sara Hernandez delivered the decisive hit, driving in the game-winning run with a single. Junior Cameron Astiazaran had tied the score earlier in the frame with an RBI knock of her own.

Sophomore Brittany McIntyre, who paced the Flames to victory earlier in the day with her bat, guided UIC with her right arm versus Bears. McIntyre (2-4) shut Mercer out through the first seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits in the game while striking out three.

The Flames will be back in action on Friday as they take on Purdue and #22 South Florida in pool play.
