San Diego, Calif. - The UIC softball team's seventh-inning rally came up just short on Sunday afternoon as the Flames had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 7-6 loss to UC-Riverside in their final contest at the USD Invite.

The Flames (7-5) trailed 7-2 heading into the final frame, but wouldn't go away quietly.

UIC pulled within a single tally and put the tying run on second with two outs after a clutch, two-run single by freshman Nicole Robinson. The Flames were unable to square the con test, though, as Highlander pitcher Christen Songer got rookie Lauren Brennan to pop out to short to end the game.

Songer earned the win, despite allowing six runs on nine hits on the day.

Junior Brittany McIntyre was tagged with the loss for UIC. The Flames right-hander allowed four runs on four hits in three innings and now owns a 2-5 record this season. Freshman Mercedes Lovato surrendered three runs on seven hits in relief of McIntyre.

UIC fell behind early as a two-out, bases loaded double by Jennifer Thompson staked UC-Riverside to a 3-0 first-inning lead.

The Flames tallied a run in the bottom of the first as senior Cameron Astiazaran led off the frame with a triple and was then promptly driven home on a single by freshman Brittany Dixon (3-for-4, RBI).

The Highlanders upped their advantage to 4-1 in the top of the fourth to chase McIntyre and then broke the game open in the fifth with three runs on three consecutive, two-out singles off Lovato.

An RBI double by UIC junior Nicole Shepard (2-for-3) in the bottom of the sixth made the score 7-2.

Sophomore Elizabeth Jacoby then set the tone for the Flames' seventh-inning rally with a leadoff double to left field. One batter later, rookie Mallory Studzinski delivered a pinch-hit, RBI double to cut the Highlander lead to 7-3. After the second out was recorded, UIC proceeded to load the bases and soon plated its second run of the inning when Songer walked Shepard. Robinson followed with a two-run single for the final 7-6 margin.

Tournament Notes: UIC finished the USD Invite with a 3-2 record...freshman Brittany Dixon batted .636 over the weekend...senior Cameron Astiazaran batted .500 for the weekend with seven, extra-base hits.
