    Las Cruces, N.M. - The UIC softball team fell short in its efforts for a third straight win as New Mexico State topped the Flames, 5-1, in the finale of the 27th Annual Troy Cox Classic.

    The Flames finished the tournament with a record of 2-3 and now are 3-10 on the year. The Aggies, meanwhile, picked up their first win of the weekend and improved to 2-15 this season.

    New Mexico State pitcher Jennifer Bride kept UIC's bats under wraps, shutting the Flames out for six innings while allowing just three hits on the day.

    The Aggies' offense then took care of the rest with single runs in the first and second inning off UIC starter Alycia Creese. New Mexico State then broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. highlighted by a two-run single by Stacy Knight.

    Creese (0-2), who was tagged with the loss, allowed five earned runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings in the circle.

    The Flams tallied their lone run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by senior Alycia Creese.

    Following the game, UIC second baseman Meghan Gallagher earned all-tournament honors.Gallagher batted .300 over the weekend while posting a perfect fielding percentage at second base.

    The Flames will be back in action on Thursday, March 4, when they open play at the 2004 Speedline Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
