Softball Homers Twice In 10-2 Win Over Nationally-Ranked Texas State
Feb. 21, 2004
Las Cruces, N.M. - The UIC softball team opened second-day action at the 27th Annual Troy Cox Classic in impressive fashion, homering twice and pounding out a season-high 14 hits en route to a 10-2 victory over #25 Texas State on Saturday. Senior Amanda Rivera (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and junior Cameron Astiazaran (2-for-4, 3R, 2 RBI) both homered for the Flames (2-9), who moved to 1-2 at the tournament with the win. Texas State falls to 9-4 overall this year with the loss. Sophomore Brittany McIntyre picked up her first win in the circle for UIC this season, tossing a complete game while striking out a career-high nine batters. McIntyre is now 1-3 on the year. The Flames jumped out early on Texas State as Rivera launched a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. It was her team-high third home run of the season and pulled her within two blasts of the UIC career home run record. Up 4-2 after three innings, the Flames tacked on six unanswered runs over the final four frames. Rivera and freshman Tonya Maosi both tallied RBI in a three-run fourth, then Astiazaran launched her first home run with a two-run shot in the fifth.
UIC will be back in action this evening as they take on tournament host New Mexico State.
