Softball Falls To Portland State In Opener Of 27th Annual Troy Cox Classic
Feb. 20, 2004 Las Cruces, N.M. - The UIC softball team opened the 27th Annual Troy Cox Classic on a sour note as Portland State bested the Flames, 8-0, in five innings on Friday morning. UIC trailed the Vikings (2-4) by just a single run until Portland State (2-4) erupted for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kayla Lewis struck the decisive blow with a two-out grand slam off Flames reliever Chelsey Barclay. Erin Stokey followed Lewis with a solo blast for the final 8-0 margin. Sophomore Brittany McIntyre started for UIC and was tagged with the loss, dropping to 0-4 on the season. She allowed five runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Michelle Hext (2-1) was the winning pitcher for the Vikings, surrendering just one hit while striking out five. Freshman Tonya Maosi tallied the Flames lone hit with a single in the second inning.
UIC will be back in action later this afternoon as they take on Colorado State.
