UIC Drops Hard-Fought Effort To Redbirds|

TEMPE, Ariz. – The UIC softball team (0-10) collected 12 hits in the final outing of the Littlewood Classic Sunday at the Farrington stadium against Illinois State (5-5). With 15 hits, the Redbirds outlasted the Flames 16-8 in six innings.
Junior lead-off batter Natalie Hernandez collected three hits and three RBI, while seniors Melissa Preish and Coryn Schmit posted two hits and two and one RBI, respectively. Junior Courtney Heeley added two hits and an RBI.
Senior pitcher Devin Miller started inside the circle for UIC. She threw almost four innings, before freshman Bridget Boyle entered to complete the fourth inning and fifth inning. Boyle then started the sixth inning before Miller re-entered to complete the game. Miller threw 150 pitches and Boyle threw 39.
After the Redbirds collected one run in the bottom of the second inning, UIC answered in the third inning with two runs.
As the back-and-forth game continued the Redbirds scored three runs in the bottom half of the third frame as UIC answered in the fourth with three of its own runs to gain a 5-4 lead.
Illinois State then went on a scoring spree in the fourth with five runs to re-gain the lead at 9-5. Schmit then went the distance in the fifth inning with a solo homerun for a 9-6 score.
After holding the Redbirds scoreless in the fifth UIC added two runs in the top of the sixth to come within one run ats a 9-8 score.
Despite the continued effort by UIC the Redbirds secured the contest by placing seven runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to capture a 16-8 victory in six innings of play.
UIC has a week off before resuming competition March 1 at the USF Under Armour Invitational. Competition will take place in Clearwater, Fla., and Tampa, Fla. The Flames open the five-game event against Kent State at 2:45 p.m. (CT).
