TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman Laura Swan recorded her first career homerun with the Flames Friday against Michigan State in the top of the seventh inning. UIC concluded the first day of the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz., with an 8-0 and 5-1 loss to UNI (3-3) and Michigan State (2-3), respectively.

Junior Natalie Hernandez paced the Flames in the opening game against UNI as the shortstop went 3-for-3 on the day. Senior Kara Komp and junior Jenna Marsalli added in a hit a piece.

Senior Devin Miller started inside the circle for UIC and through four innings she threw 89 pitches, before freshman Bridget Boyle threw 39 pitches in one inning.

UIC gave up four runs in the second inning, followed by two in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to conclude the game in the bottom of the fifth frame.

UIC then squared off against Michigan State and Miller held the Spartans scoreless through four complete innings, before Michigan State’s Stephanie Sanders hit a grand slam and then added an addition run for a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Then, Swan, who posted two of UIC’s four hits in the contest, hit her first homerun in a UIC uniform. Despite the effort, Michigan State’s nine hits and five runs outlasted the Flames in a 5-1 outcome.

UIC continues the Littlewood Classic Saturday as the Flames face Michigan State at 9:15 a.m. (CT), followed by Arizona State at 3:00 p.m.
