Box Score

Catcher Stefanie Christoferson blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to give the University of Illinois at Chicago a 2-0 victory over Mississippi on Friday. The game was played in Arlington, Texas, in the opening round of the UTA Invitational.

The game began as a pitching dual, with Mississippi holding UIC to a 0-0 score through six innings. Then, with two outs in the top of the seventh, Julie Bumgarder kept things going with a single to right field. After Amy Gonzales entered the game as a pinch runner for Bumgardner, Christoferson stepped to the plate. Her shot clear the right field fence, giving the Flames 2-0 lead the would prove to be the final margin of victory.

Samantha Iuli (3-0) picked up the win for UIC, striking out 13 batters while allowing just four hits in seven innings.

The win moved the Flames' record to 5-2 and was UIC's first game in the UTA Invitational. Mississippi dropped to 4-2. UIC is the defending UTA Invitational Champion
