Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UIC softball team fell to 0-5 on the season on Sunday with a 12-4, five-inning loss to host UC-Santa Barbara in the final game of the 3rd Annual UCSB Early Bird Classic.

This marks the second straight year the Flames went winless at this campaign-opening event.

The Gauchos jumped on UIC early on Sunday with a single run in the first inning off starter Brittany McIntyre, before Blair Robbins' second-inning grand slam gave UCSB a 5-0 lead they would never relinquish.

The Flames would rally back with two runs in the top of the third inning as Michelle Miller (2-for-3) and Sara Hernandez both tallied RBI. UIC would also tack on two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but on each occasion the Gauchos answered the Flames, tallying two of their own in the third, then exploding with five runs in the fourth for the final 12-4 margin.

McIntyre was tagged with the loss for UIC, allowing six runs on four hits in two innings of work. She is now 0-2 on the year. Rookie Chelsey Barclay spelled McIntyre and surrendered six runs, four earned, of her own in just over an inning in the circle.

Katie Junge picked up the win for UC-Santa Barbara, going to 1-0 this season.

UIC will look for its first win on Saturday, February 14th, when they open play at the Ole Miss Tournament by taking on in-state rival Southern Illinois at 9:00 a.m.
