Jan. 31, 2003
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Long Beach State catcher Roxanne Staniorski's RBI groundout in the top of the seventh inning propelled the 49ers to a 4-3 victory over UIC on Friday afternoon at the UCSB Early Bird Tournament.
The Flames, who were unable to pull out their first win of the season, drop to 0-2 on the year while Long Beach State remained undefeated at 2-0.
Meredith Cervanka picked up the win for the 49ers, tossing seven innings while allowing three runs on eight hits. Staniorski paced Long Beach State at the plate, driving in three runs on the day.
UIC junior Alycia Creese was tagged with the loss, surrendering 11 hits and three earned runs in seven innings in the circle.
Senior Amanda Rivera and rookie Joyce Cathey both tabbed their first multi-hit outings of the season for the Flames. Rivera went 2-for-3 with an RBI single while Cathey continued to show well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI out of the lead-off spot.
UIC got on the board first on Friday afternoon, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Rivera.
The 49ers answered with one of their own in the top of the second, though, then tacked on two more in the third on a two-run single by Staniorski.
The Flames would trim Long Beach State's lead to 3-2 on an RBI single by Creese in the third, then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Cathey.
UIC, which had runners on second and third with just one out in the sixth inning, was unable to break the game open as Cervanka got Michelle Miller to ground out sharply to short and Sara Hernandez to line one back to her to end the Flames' rally.
The 49ers would take the lead back in the top of the seventh on the RBI groundout by Staniorski.
UIC will be back in action at the UCSB Early Bird Tournament on Saturday morning as they take on Santa Clara at 10:00 a.m. CST, before finishing the day with a rematch versus Long Beach State at 2:45 p.m. CST.
