Aug. 17, 2010
As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches, UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics. CHICAGO - The UIC women's gymnastics team finished the year with strong individual efforts by sending a trio of competitors to the NCAA Columbia Regional. Rachel Montoya, Andrea Skala and Chantel Turk were the three Flames who competed for UIC in Columbia, giving the Flames the most competitors for individuals at the site. Turk, a freshman, was honored as MIC Newcomer of the Year. The freshman was also named All-MIC First Team on the vault. To add on to these honors, Turk was named MIC Gymnast of the Week on two occasions. Skala also earned All-MIC postseason accolades, earning All-MIC First Team on the vault and floor routine and All-MIC Second Team for the uneven bars and all-around. In March the sophomore was also named MIC Gymnast of the Week for all-around. Montoya's performances had a large impact for the Flames. To add to her first regional appearance, she was named All-MIC Second Team for the uneven bars and all-around. Montoya was honored with three of the team's most prestigious awards: Most Improved Gymnast, along with Chantel Turk, Most Consistent Beam Performer with Emily Fiorilli and Most Valuable Gymanst along with Skala. Sarah Murray was another Flame who garnered Second Team All-MIC honors for her performance on the floor and vault. The women's gymnastics squad was also successful in the classroom, receiving UIC's Academic Team of the Year. The Flames also placed Erin Duggan, Christine Girard, Jamie Krause, Kayleigh Kremer and Emily Lawrence on the All-Conference Academic Team.
The Flames had no graduating seniors this year and will be returning 12 student-athletes to compete next year, giving them plenty of experience. UIC begins its 2011 campaign Jan. 8 at Bowling Green in Toledo, Ohio. |
