Feb. 29, 2012
CHICAGO – Sophomore Kimberly Randall (Lansing, Ill./Skyline Gymnastics) has been named the Midwest Independent Conference Specialist of the Week, it was announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon. Randall earns the honor after her performance on the vault as the Flames downed (then) No. 18 Illinois Feb. 25 inside the Physical Education Building in Chicago, Ill.
“It is exciting for Kim as she has been out of competition for nearly two years due to an injury to her knee,” co-head coach Peter Jansson said. “To come back with a brand new vault, and then stick it is as good of a comeback as we could ask for.”
Randall posted a 9.850 on the vault to lead the Flames, along with junior Chantel Turk (Hazelcrest, Ill./Gym Kinetics), who posted the same score. UIC defeated Illinois on the event in a 48.950-48.900 outcome.
The Flames split events with the Fighting Illini as UIC won the vault (48.950-48.900), while gaining a hefty lead on the parallel bars with a 48.700-46.850 victory. Illinois owned the second half of competition with a 49.050-48.725 win on the beam and a 49.175-48.875 decision on the floor exercise. Despite a second-half showing, the Flames handled Illinois, 195.250-193.975 to propel the squad to a No. 28 ranking.
The 28th-ranked UIC faces another Big Ten opponent, Michigan State, Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT) inside the Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.
