CHICAGO – Senior Catherine Dion and sophomore Alexandra Vedenin have been named MIC Gymnast and Specialist of the Week, respectively, as announced by the Midwest Independent Conference on Thursday. This is the fourth honor of the season for Dion and the first of Vedenin’s career.
Dion and Vedenin produced top scores and finishes for the Flames to contribute to a 193.175-193.100 win at home against conference-foe Texas Woman’s on Feb. 14.
Dion claimed a first-place finish on floor with 9.825 and then recorded UIC's top score on bars with 9.825 for seecond. The Gatineau, Quebec, Canada native came in fourth on both vault (9.775) and beam (9.750) before finishing first in the all-around with 39.175.
Vedenin collected a first-place finish for the first time in her career when she kicked off the meet with a personal-best 9.850 on vault. The Oshawa, Ontario, Canada native then competed on beam (9.075) before scoring a career-high on floor with 9.725.
Dion and Vedenin are on the road with the Flames this weekend, as they begin competition at the Illinois Classic in Normal, Ill., at the Horton Field House alongside host Illinois State, No. 14 Illinois and Northern Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. CT before a meet at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Iowa.
