Women's Gymnastics To Face SEMO
Feb. 18, 2012
CHICAGO – The UIC women’s gymnastics team (5-4) contends South East Missouri State (0-5) Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (CT) inside the Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
“We are excited to go up against another one of our conference foes,” co-head coach Peter Jansson said. “The team is really focused on details because we’re on a great run right now. They have competed well away and at home and we look forward to another good away score to help out our NCAA qualifying average. We also hope to continue what we did on bars and vault this past weekend. Hopefully we will be a little sharper on floor and get our depth back on beam too.”
The Flames hope to earn their sixth win Saturday against the Redhawks, coming from a 195.000-190.650 victory against Seattle Pacific’s Falcons. Outstanding contributions were made by seniors Rachel Montoya (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Olympia Gymnastics Center) and Andrea Skala (Brookfield, Ill./Flying High Sports), junior Chantel Turk (Hazelcrest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), and sophomores Cynthia Lemieux-Guillemette (St.-Hubert, Quebec/Andre-Laurendeau) and Catherine Dion (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada/ Nicolas-Gatineau).
Turk ranked highest on the vault and floor exercises scoring a 9.875 and a 9.875, respectively. Meanwhile, Skala’s career best performance of a 9.900 led the Flames on the uneven bars, followed by Montoya and Turk who tied with 9.800. The beam scores of Lemieux-Guillemette and Dion were also superior as they each scored a 9.850. Montoya earned a total of 38.875 in the all around position.
The Flames know the Redhawks as the winners of the MIC Championships on March 19, 2011. Though the Flames placed third in that competition, their current momentum suggests a continuation of their winning streak.
