Women's Gymnastics Hosts Ball State This Saturday
Feb. 13, 2004
Chicago, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago women's gymnastics team will cap its three-meet homestand this Saturday, February 14th with a battle against Ball State at the UIC Physical Education Building beginning at 2 p.m.
Saturday is also Senior Day for the women's gymnastics squad. Four-year veterans Megan Fey and Jamie Grabowski will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the UIC program during their tenure.
SETTING THE SCENE: The Flames are fresh off their first victory of the 2004 campaign, a 194.450-191.700 win over Midwest Independent rival Southeast Missouri State. Paced by Alyson Cacciatore's second straight all-around title, UIC never trailed and took three of four events to down the Otahkians at the PEB. Ball State enters this weekend's meet with a split at the Cardinal Classic on February 6th. The Cardinals downed the Fighting Illini of Illinois, 193.425-192.975, while barely missing a second win in their loss to Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green. BGSU posted a 193.475 to narrowly overcome the Cards' 193.425, which was their season-best team score.
AC, PART TWO: Alyson Cacciatore has quickly become UIC's go-to performer and a constant threat to re-write the school's record book. The Glenview native notched her second straight all-around crown of the season with a 39.100 total tally against SEMO last weekend. Cacciatore's performance followed a strong outing against Arizona on January 31st, when the junior captured first in the all-around with a season-best 39.325. Cacciatore is already a part of three individual school records.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: Ball State is led by all-arounders Kelli Davis, Courtney Vojtasek and Jessica Surridge. Surridge posted a team-high 38.600 in the all-around last weekend at the Cardinal Classic, finishing second overall. The Cardinals are currently 1-3 in the MAC and 4-3 overall, good for sixth in the conference.
SALUTING THE SENIORS:
The Flames will be honoring their two seniors at the Ball State meet. Megan Fey (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles H.S.) and Jamie Grabowski (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs H.S.) will be recognized for their four years of service to UIC as students and athletes. Both Fey and Grabowski are scheduled to compete in the meet.
