CHICAGO - The UIC women's gymnastics team will hit the road for the first time this season to take on Penn State, Southeast Missouri and Cornell in a quad meet at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. CT.
The Flames are coming off of a 194.750-190.000 loss to Arizona on Jan. 11. Despite the result, senior and MIC Gymnast of the Week Catherine Dion led the squad in three events, while tying for first on uneven bars with 9.800, placing third on beam with 9.775 and scoring a career-best 9.800 on floor to tie for fourth. Redshirt junior Kimberly Randall came in with UIC's top score on vault with a tally of 9.700.
Heading into Saturday's meet, UIC will see familiarity in Penn State and SEMO, while it will take on Cornell for the first time under the direction of co-head coaches Peter Jansson and Mary Jansson.
Last season, the Flames faced Penn State in their season opener at the Physical Education Building, where the Nittany Lions took a 194.150-191.700 win. Dion tied for first on beam (9.825), junior Citlali Cuevas took second on floor (9.675) and junior Gabrielle May placed in a tie for third on bar (9.775).
The last time UIC went up against SEMO was at the 2013 MIC Championship, where UIC claimed the title and SEMO came in third. The two teams previously met during the regular season in 2012, when the Flames traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., and came away with a 195.250-191.900 win after defeating the Redhawks in every event.
