CHICAGO – The UIC women’s gymnastics team gets set to open its regular season Saturday when it welcomes No. 17 Arizona to the Physical Education Building. The meet is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. CT.
"We are excited to start of the season and also to match up against a national powerhouse like Arizona," co-head coach Peter Jansson said. "We still have some lingering injuries that have impacted our depth, so it will be a great opportunity for several of our athletes to get some experience. Either way, we are excited to start a season where we will see a lot of new faces and some great gymnastics from our Flames."
The Flames are back in action after holding their annual Mixed Pairs exhibition meet on Dec. 7 at the PEB with the men’s squad. Senior Catherine Dion came away with the best scores in three events to lead the team on vault (9.60), beam (9.75) and floor (9.70), as junior Citlali Cuevas produced a 9.35 for the top score on uneven bars.
Following a 2013 season that resulted in a first-place finish in the Midwest Independent Conference, UIC will look to improve on its accomplishments as it welcomes five newcomers and returns nine, including Dion, who represented the Flames last season at the NCAA Regional alongside former gymnast Chantel Turk.
The last time UIC met with Arizona was on Feb. 4, 2011, in Tuscon, Ariz. The Wildcats defeated the Flames, 195.400-193.450, but UIC’s mark of 193.450 was its highest of the season.
