Fayetteville, Ark.- The UIC women's gymnastics team wrapped up a stellar 2006 season on Saturday night with a fifth-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional at the University of Arkansas' Barnhill Arena. The Flames took fifth with a 191.125, just two points behind fourth-place Illinois (193.125). UIC finished ahead of Midwest Independent foe and fellow regional qualifier Southeast Missouri State (189.050). Senior Veronique Meunier led UIC in the all-around with a 38.625 in her final collegiate meet, placing an impressive eighth. Freshman Zandre Labuschagne followed with a 37.650. Rookie Annie Kachman saw her first action since a thigh injury held her out since early February, and the true freshman showed no signs of rust. Kachman led UIC with a vault of 9.775 to take 13th. Junior Jessica Panos was solid on vault as well, placing second on the team in the event with a 9.750. Labuschagne paced the Flames on bars with a 9.725 (16th). Junior Rachael Zelinski and Meunier were at the top of UIC's beam scoring. Zelinski led the way with a 9.625 to take 19th, followed right behind by Meunier's 9.6. Third-year standout Jessie Jaworowicz wrapped up a career campaign by leading UIC on floor with a 9.675.
UIC Co-Head Coach Peter Jansson was happy with his young team's showing, which was UIC's best placing at the regional meet since a fifth-place finish in 2000. "Really outstanding performance throughout," said Jansson. "We were a little shaky on beam at the start, but we had some great showings. It was a great way to finish the season. "V [Meunier] had maybe the best meet of her career," said Jansson. "Annie did a great job on her two events. It was great to have her back in the lineup. "Redge [Charron] did a good job," Jansson continued. "It was very good for a senior like Redge to get in on her last meet. "This was a fantastic experience for the young team we have." Florida won the meet with a 196.375, followed by Arkansas with a 195.400. Those two will move on to the NCAA National Championships. UCLA placed third with a 195.175. |
