SHREVEPORT, La. - The UIC women's gymnastics team recorded a season-high 195.600 and placed first at the Midwest Independence Conference meet Saturday in Shreveport, La. Senior Chantel Turk was selected as the Conference Gymnast of the Year.

Illinois State placed second with a 195.425, followed by Southeast Missouri State in third place (195.050), Texas Women's and Lindenwood finished fourth (194.775) and fifth (193.050), respectively. Centenary rounded out the team scores with a 192.900.

The Flames claimed the crown in each event except the parallel bars at the MIC event. On the vault, UIC posted a 49.950, followed by a 48.725 on parallel bars, a 48.925 on the beam and a 49.000 on the floor exercise.

Turk paced the team on the vault with a 9.850 to place third in a two-way tie. Gabrielle May posted a 9.825 on the bars in a five-way tie for third place. Alyssa Cruz claimed second place on the beam with a 9.850. Turk and Tamara Moten finished in a three-way tie for first place on the floor with a 9.875 mark. Catherine Dion finished fourth in the all-around with a 39.075 score.

During the banquet on Friday night the Flames had eight members selected to the MIC Conference Scholastic Team. Among those selected are Alexandra Valin, Guilia Hindermann, Moten, Citlali Cuevas, May, Turk, Erin Duggan and Emily Lawrence.
