Women's Gymnastics Places Second At State Of Illinois Classic

Champaign, Ill. - The UIC women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 194.550 and placed second at the State of Illinois Classic on Saturday afternoon. Host 24th-ranked Illinois edged UIC with a score of 194.825, keeping the Flames just short of defending their 2007 title. Northern Illinois finished in third (193.735) and Illinois State came in fourth (191.950) rounding out the field. UIC was led by DeAvera Todd and Annie Kachman in the Flames' best team effort of the 2008 campaign. Todd recorded her top all around performance of the season tallying a combined 39.075, finishing in third overall. In addition, Todd took home the vault title tallying an impressive 9.850. Co-captain Kachman placed in fourth behind Todd with another stellar all-around score of 38.925 to pace the Flames. Ashley Thurston was solid on the uneven bars as she tied for first with Illinois' Julie Crall compiling a season-best score of 9.850. Other notable performances for the Flames included a second place finish for Sarah Murray on the floor exercise (9.825) and a third place finish for Zandre Labuschagne on the balance beam (9.800) UIC will look to defend their conference title next Saturday (March 28) at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships in Shreveport, La.
