Normal, Ill.- An admirable effort was not enough for the UIC women's gymnastics team on Saturday night, as the Flames could not retain their State of Illinois Classic title at Redbird Arena.

UIC came in third with a 190.175, behind first-place Illinois (191.850) and runner-up Northern Illinois (190.250). Illinois State placed fourth.

Zandre Labuschagne led UIC in the all-around with a 38.300, placing second overall. Labuschagne led the Flames in the uneven bars event with a 9.725.

Veronique Meunier turned in an all-around tally of 37.725, highlighted by her team-leading vault of 9.8.

Jessie Jaworowicz posted a 9.8 on beam and a 9.725 on floor exercise to lead UIC.

UIC posted a meet-best 48.575 as a team on vault.

The Flames will defend their conference crown at the Midwest Independent Conference Championship next weekend in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
