CHICAGO – The UIC women’s gymnastics team wrapped up competition at the Chicago Style Meet on Friday night and came away with a combined score of 191.150 to finish in fourth place behind No. 18 Boise State (196.325), Bowling Green (194.325) and North Carolina (192.075). Senior Catherine Dion, redshirt-junior Kimberly Randall and junior Gabrielle May all collected top scores for the Flames.

"We were disappointed to take fourth, just one-tenth out of third behind North carolina," co-head coach Peter Jansson. "It would have been exciting to beat the Tar Heels, but another weak team effort on the floor exercise to start the day set us back and started us much lower than we would have hoped for. The only event where we did not count a mistake was bars."

"We had some exciting performances from some of the girls who are returning," added Jansson. "Sasha (Vedenin) did a good beam set and a good vault. We were happy to see Kerensa (Mitchell) in the exhibition spot on beam, hitting a routine there as well. Kim (Randall) had a really good vault and a solid bar, and Nicole (Szabo) had a great bar routine and a very solid floor."

On vault, Randall led the squad after posting an impressive season-high 9.800 to contribute to the team total of 48.275, while Dion and May came in just behind at 9.675. Dion tallied 9.800 on bars with freshman Nicole Szabo coming in with 9.775 to assist with the team’s score of 48.725.

Dion recorded the top finish for UIC on beam after scoring 9.825, as junior Citlali Cuevas produced the second-best score of 9.725. May was the one to take the best finish on floor with 9.700, followed by Szabo with 9.600.

In the all-around, Dion combined for 38.400 and a team-best, while May finished with 38.175 and Cuevas totaled 37.875.

The Flames will make a quick turnaround and head to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri and Alaska Anchorage in a tri-meet at Houck Field House on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
