Women's Gymnastics Breeze To Victory at Southeast Missouri State
Jan. 27, 2001 Cape Girardeau, Missouri - It was only a matter of time. Women's Gymnastics coach Peter Jansson finally got the all-around performance from his squad that he had been seeking. UIC, led by two victories from Laura Jungels, scored a season-best 192.725 points to cruise past host Southeast Missouri State (189.800) and Hamline (178.525) at the Show Me Center on Saturday. "We really hit all four events for the first time this season," Jansson said. "That's really exciting." Jungels won the floor exercise event with a score of 9.825 and then tied teammate Sara Casica on the balance beam with a career-best score of 9.850. Casica and teammate Cheryl Rubinger tied for second in the all-around as both posted a score of 38.45. Southeast Missouri State's Ashley Godwin won the all-around title with a score of 38.5. Junior Jaclyn Messerges rebounded from a slow start to the season and won the parallel bars event with a score of 9.800. Teammate Amy August finished second with a score of 9.775. Junior Erica Varner was the top UIC performer on the vault with a score of 9.6. "I'm very proud of our performance," Jansson said. "We were much tougher and much stronger. I think this meet is a little bit of a turnaround for us. Our confidence is definitely up."
The Flames will be back in action on Friday when they will host the Air Force Academy at 7 P.M. at the Physical Education Building.
