Box Score

The women's gymnastics team used strong performances in the floor exercise and the balance beam to thrash in-state rival Northern Illinois on Sunday by the score of 191.475 to 183.725 at the Physical Education Building.

UIC (1-0) fell short of a team record in the floor exercise by one tenth of a point with a score of 49.15. Senior Sara Casica won the event with a score of 9.875. The Flames received career bests from junior Nadia Ori (9.800), senior Chrissy Johnston (9.800), junior Erica Varner (9.825) and senior Laura Jungels (9.850).

The Flames were also solid on the vault as junior Amy August tied a career-high score with a 9.775. Varner set another career-best with a 9.700 on the routine.

"We were fantastic on the floor and vault," UIC head coach Peter Jansson beamed. "But we were a little shaky on the beam."

The balance beam was the only event where the Flames did not have three individuals atop the leaderboard. Johnston won the event with a score of 9.650 followed by Rubinger's 9.550. Reyna Gilbert placed third for Northern Illinois with a score of 9.450.

Johnston took home another first place finish as she tied with Casica with a 9.700 on the uneven bars.

Rubinger captured the all-around title with a season-best score of 38.175 followed by Casica (37.400). Northern Illinois' Anna Gardina placed third with an all-around score of 37.225.

UIC will travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri this weekend to take on the Southeast Missouri State Otahkians at 7:00 PM on Saturday, January 27th.
