Box Score

Kalamazoo, Mich. - UIC Women's Gymnastics coach Peter Jansson knew that there was room for improvement following the Flames performance in the Bowling Green Triangular on Friday night.

UIC did just that as they rebounded with a second-place finish at the Western Michigan Quadrangular on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The host Broncos won the meet with 193.100 points followed by UIC (191.025), Massachusetts (189.6) and Eastern Michigan (189.400).

"We took a step in the right direction," Jansson said. "We were stronger on the vault and bars, but the beam gave us some troubles."

Junior Amy August turned in the Flames' lone first place performance on the uneven bars with a 9.850. She and senior Cheryl Rubinger also tied for fourth overall on the vault with a 9.725.

"Amy had a real good meet," Jansson said. "She did a great job of stepping up for us today."

Jansson also lauded the efforts of senior Laura Jungels and junior Nadia Ori. Jungels placed second in the floor exercise with a score of 9.775 and she also shared top team honors on the balance beam (9.650) with senior Tina Gregori.

Ori was solid on the uneven bars (9.700) and the floor exercise (9.650).

Western Michigan's Annemarie Adkins won the all-around title with a score of 38.150. Rubinger led the Flames with a fourth-place finish of 37.925 followed by senior Sara Casica's seventh-place finish of 36.725.

"It's an early season meet," Jansson said. "We know what we need to do know. The skill and quality of the gymnastics is as good as its ever been. We're going to be ready."
