Fullerton, Calif. - The UIC women's gymnastics team has never been notorious for quick starts to its season, and Sunday's 2003 debut was no different, as the Flames (191.700) were defeated by a pair of talented squads in Cal State Fullerton (193.875) and Utah State (192.050) in California.

Sunday's result was quite similar to last season's first meet at Auburn where the Flames came out slow. If last season was any indication, however, the Flames will be just fine as they broke the school scoring record en route to a regional berth.

Jennifer O'Neil led the Flames in California, as she won the vault competition with an excellent score of 9.875. She was closely followed by Atlin Mitchell in second with a 9.85. Mitchell finished fourth in the all-around competition with a total of 38.6.

Alyson Cacciatore had a nice day for the Flames taking fourth on beam (9.75) and sixth on bars (9.75).

Newcomer Jackie Jaworowicz made a splash finishing third on floor with a score of 9.85. Fellow newcomer Holly Bruhn tied for fourth on vault with a 9.8.

The Flames will open their home ledger on Sunday, January 19, when they welcome the Auburn Tigers for a 2:00 p.m. affair at the UIC Physical Education Building.
