CHICAGO - The UIC women’s golf team will kick off the fall season on its home course of Cog Hill Golf & Country Club on Monday as they host the Chi-Town Classic for the second year in a row. The Flames carry a full load of fall events as they will compete in five additional tournaments.  The 2013-14 season serves as the third year for UIC women’s golf as the program began varsity competition in the fall of 2011.

“We’re extremely excited to begin a new season,” said head coach Carol Rhoades.  “Our program continues to grow and so do our student-athletes.  The Horizon League has many talented golfers and we look forward to the competition.”

The Flames tout seven returning players this season, including senior Angela Shin, juniors Elizabeth Curtiss, Ryann Gilley, Cherise Mangal, Lindsay Purpura and Kayla Stueland and sophomore Caitlan Smollen. The Flames add freshman Shannon Menard (Downers Grover, Ill. / Downers Grove North) to the squad.

At the Chi-Town Classic, UIC will host cross-town rivals Loyola and Chicago-State. The Flames hope to use inside knowledge about their home course to give them an edge over the competition. Cog Hill is ranked among the top-100 golf courses in the country by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

The following week (Sept. 8-10) the team will travel to the Green Bay Country Club to participate in the Green Bay Shootout and Invitational.

Pressing on with their season, the Flames will prepare for the upcoming week’s event through a dual match at Cog Hill on September 14 against Horizon League-foe Green Bay.  On September 15-17, the team will participate in the Cougar Classic at Harborside International Golf Club.

The Flames will have more than a month to prepare for their final event of the fall season, the Flyer Invitational, which will take place at NCR Country Club in Dayton, Ohio on Oct. 21-22.
