CHICAGO - Third-year UIC head women’s golf coach Carol Rhoades announced Friday (May 30) that Julia Kim, a high school senior from Aurora, Colo., will join the Flames next season. Kim was a three-time 5A state qualifier at Rangeview High School and won the East Metro Athletic Conference (EMAC) individual championship title as a senior.

Kim was Rangeview’s first female golfer to qualify for the state championship as a sophomore. Her three total trips to the state championship are also a school record.

“I am happy to announce the addition of Julia Kim to the Flames program,” said Rhoades. “Julia is a product of a very successful junior development program in Denver and has consistently shown the ability to rise to the occasion as the competition level has increased. I anticipate her progress to continue in her career as a Flame as she matures in the competitive golf arena.”

Kim’s stellar 2014 postseason started with a round of 76 and the EMAC South Division individual title. She saved her career best round for the EMAC Championship as she rallied for a two-stroke victory. Trailing by three shots at Buffalo Run Golf Course, Kim fired a 1-over par 73 and finished with a two-round total of 155.

Kim’s round of 73 is an EMAC record and shattered the previous school record of 82, also held by Kim. She finished her round with three birdies and 11 pars.

Kim shot an 85 at the 5A Central Regional tournament to guarantee her spot at the state tournament. She then posted her best career finish at the 5A state championship when she tied for 35th overall in the 84-golfer field.

Kim shot identical rounds of 87 at the state championship and finished with a two-round total of 174, which was 20 strokes better than 2013. She improved 19 places from 2013 and 36 spots from her debut in 2012.

Based on her state tournament results in 2012 and 2013, Kim was twice named to the honorable mention Aurora Sentinel All-City Girls Golf Team. She was selected to the first team All-EMAC on three occasions.

Kim is the fourth addition for the 2014 season. She will join:

Kelsey Jensen - 5-foot-4 from Plant City, Fla. (Plant City High School/Seminole State College of Florida)
Jennifer Kim - 5-foot-5 from Palatine, Ill. (William Fremd High School)
Marki Kaim - 5-foot-1 from Elk Grove, Ill. (Elk Grove High School)
