April 26, 2012
HOWLEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - UIC freshman women's golfer Alex Perez was named to the all-conference team in advance of the 2012 Horizon League Championship, it was announced by the League office Thursday night. Perez becomes UIC's first-ever All-League selection in the first full year of competition for the program.
"We are very honored that Alex is representing UIC on the All-Horizon League Team," said head coach Carol Rhoades. "For a freshman on a first-year program to earn all-conference honors is pretty special, and is a tribute to the year she had. She's very excited, and is looking forward to leading her team into their first-ever Horizon League Championship event."
Since beginning her career at UIC last fall, Perez has carded nine rounds in the 70's, and has finished in the individual top-five in each of the past two spring tournaments. Perez shot an eight-over-par 80 in the final round of the Detroit Titans Invitational (April 9-10), which marked the lowest individual round of the day.
Perez broke 80 in both rounds of two individual tournaments during the fall, and shot 79-79 (158) in the Detroit Sunshine Spring Classic to open the competitive spring season. In a combined 20 total rounds, she has never carded a single-round total higher than 87.
The All-Horizon League team consisted of Perez, Michelle Nash (Butler), Isabella Lambert (Butler), Jenna Peters (Butler), Collette Hansen (Detroit), Lindsey Lammers (Detroit), Ann Vrdolyak (Loyola), and Sarah Heimlich (Youngstown State). The Women's Coach of the Year was Butler's Bill Mattingly.
The Horizon League Championships begin Friday with play being held at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The women begin play at 6:30 a.m. CST.
