April 10, 2014
CHICAGO - The UIC women's golf team continues its spring season this weekend (April 12-13) at the Delores Black Invitational. Bowling Green State University will host the event at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio. This will be the Flames' first appearance at the Delores Black Invitational, which is in its fourth year.
Stone Ridge Golf Club plays as a par 72 course and is 5,960 yards long. The 36-hole tournament will also feature Akron, Ball State, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Detroit, Eastern Michigan, IPFW, Northern Illinois, Oakland, Ohio, South Dakota State and Western Illinois.
UIC is coming off of a consistent showing at the Bradley Invitational with consecutive rounds of 338, the Flames’ lowest team score of the spring. The Flames collected six birdies and 56 pars over the weekend. UIC has fired three consecutive rounds of 338 dating back to the Seminole State Invitational last month (March 12).
Elizabeth Curtiss led the Flames with a 79 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday for a combined total of 163. Curtiss’ round of 79 ties for the second-lowest score of her career. Curtiss finished the tournament with 16 pars and three birdies.
Ryann Gilley (83-87) followed closely to Curtiss with a two-day total of 170. Caitlin Smollen (88-83) totaled 171 and Cherise Mangal (88-84) was one shot behind with a 172. Smollen’s Sunday round of 83 is the lowest of her spring season.
The Flames attempt to lower their scores this weekend as the Delores Black Invitational is the final event before the Horizon League Championship (April 24-27). The event will take place in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. at the Mission Inn Golf Resort.
