March 26, 2014
CHICAGO - Third-year UIC head women’s golf coach Carol Rhoades announced Wednesday (March 26) that the Flames will add three players next season. The Flames received a National Letter of Intent from Kelsey Jensen, a transfer from Seminole State College of Florida. Jennifer Kim (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and Marki Kaim (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) will also join the Flames in the fall.
"I am very excited about the incoming class of Flame golfers," said Rhoades. "Entering our fourth year, we have made great strides in our program and this class will take us to the next level. Led by nationally-ranked junior college transfer Kelsey Jensen, this class when combined with Jennifer Kim and Marki Kaim will make an immediate impact on our program. These three golfers add depth and experience and will elevate our program in the Horizon League while continuing to build our program into a contender."
Jensen transfers to UIC from Seminole State College of Florida, where she was named the 2013 Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Ranked as the No. 15 golfer in NJCAA, Jensen was named an honorable mention NJCAA All-American as a freshman in 2013.
Jensen finished 11th at the 2013 NJCAA Championship following a four-round score of 310, including two rounds of 76. Earlier this month, Jensen placed seventh at the 2014 Seminole State Spring Break Invitational with a two-round score of 158. UIC competed at the event and Ryann Gilley was the Flames’ best finisher at 14th with a score of 168.
Coach Rhoades on Jensen: "Kelsey Jensen is an impact player that we expect to come in and lead the Flames to the next level. Kelsey has tremendous tournament experience and has two years of NJCAA competition on a Seminole State team that is a national championship contender."
Kim was a four-year letter winner at William Fremd, where she holds the school record for lowest round with a 71 at the 2013 Class AA Regional. Kim finished second at the regional and went on to place ninth at the sectional with a round of 79.
Kim finished the 2013 fall season with rounds of 77 and 79 at the Class AA state tournament. She placed 16th out of 112 competitors at the state competition. Kim earned all-conference honors three times in the Mid-Suburban League.
Coach Rhoades on Kim: "Jennifer Kim is a Fremd High School graduate that achieved three All-Conference awards while serving as captain of her team. Jennifer is a hard working athlete who completed her high school career with a 16th place finish at the IHSA Championship. We expect Jennifer to continue her improvement and play great golf for the Flames."
Kaim was a three-time sectional qualifier and two-time regional medalist at Elk Grove High School. She was also a medalist at the 2013 Mid-Suburban League Championship following a round of 8-over par, which was good for eighth place.
Kaim is the first sectional qualifier, regional medalist and conference medalist in school history. The Grenadiers were sectional qualifiers during Kaim’s junior and senior seasons.
Coach Rhoades on Kaim: "Marki Kaim is a decorated Elk Grove High School graduate who has not only excelled in the field but in the community as well. Marki is a retired gymnast who now concentrates all of her athletic efforts in golf. I expect Marki to continue to develop her golf tournament skills as she gains more experience."
