Women's Golf Concludes Play at Chicago State's Cougar Classic

CHICAGO - The Flames competed in their fifth event of the Fall season Monday and Tuesday at Chicago State’s Cougar Classic and placed 11th out of 13 teams. Junior Ryann Gilley was the Flames’ best finisher as she placed in a tie for 27th with a 36-hole total of 160.
Held at the Harborside International Golf Club in Chicago, the Cougar Classic also featured Creighton, University of Texas-Pan American, Detroit, Dayton, IPFW, Eastern Illinois, Loyola, Northern Illinois, Green Bay, Cleveland State, Indiana State and Chicago State. The Flames shot a 325 as a team both days and finished only one shot behind Creighton (649) and two strokes behind Dayton (648).
Sophomore Caitlan Smollen, who recorded the program’s first individual title against Green Bay Saturday, tied for 40th with a 36-hole total of 163. Smollen carded a 79 on Monday, which was three shots off her career-low 76 Saturday against Green Bay.
Senior Angela Shin and junior Elizabeth Curtiss both carded a 36-hole total of 166 to finish in a tie for 52nd place. Shin fired a career-low round of 79 on Monday while Curtiss shot an 81 Tuesday. Junior Cherise Mangal cut four strokes off her Monday score (86) on Tuesday to card an 82 and finish in 60th place (168).
UIC is off for the next two weekends and the Flames continue the Fall season at the Butler Invitational (Oct. 7-8). Dayton’s Flyer Invitational (Oct. 21-22) will conclude the Fall schedule.
