GREEN BAY, Wis. – The UIC women’s golf team competed in its second and third events of the season at the Green Bay Shootout (Sept. 8) and Invitational (Sept. 9-10). The Flames took third place at the Shootout and sixth at the Invitational. UIC finished with a 36-hole total of 649 at the Invitational, which is the third lowest score in program history.

Green Bay Invitational (Sept. 9-10)

Highlighting the action in Green Bay was UIC's third lowest round in program history. During first round action at the Invitational on Monday, UIC combined for a round of 320 and finished the day in a tie for fourth place. The performance only trails past UIC efforts at the 2011 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (308) and 2012 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (312).

Elizabeth Curtiss, who carded a career-low 78 last week at the Chi-Town Classic, and Ryann Gilley both shot a 78 to lead the Flames in round one. Junior Cherise Mangal carded an 80, senior Angela Shin shot an 84 and sophomore Caitlan Smollen rounded out the UIC lineup with an 86.

“I am very pleased with Cherise's consistency and course management,” said UIC head coach Carol Rhoades after the round of 320. “Ryann is gaining confidence and we look forward to her improved scoring. Elizabeth made significant progress after a rough start by refocusing her efforts around the green. I am very proud of the way we refocused our efforts and dug deep to complete our round.”

The Flames recorded a 329 on Tuesday in round two and fell two spots in the standings. All UIC players were in the 80s, with Gilley’s 80 leading the group. Smollen followed with an 81 and Mangal carded an 82.

Gilley finished in a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole total of 158. She missed matching her lowest career 36-hole total by one stroke, which was set at the 2012 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (157).

Mangal finished with a 36-hole total of 162 and placed in a tie for 24th. Meanwhile, Curtiss finished in 28th (164), Smollen landed in a tie for 32nd (167) and Shin placed in 39th (170).

Green Bay Shootout (Sept. 8)

Mangal’s round of 80 led UIC on Sunday at the Green Bay Shootout. The Flames finished with a team score of 342, which placed third out of four squads. Gilley carded an 85 and Smollen finished with an 86.

Pressing on with its Fall season, UIC will prepare for the Chicago State’s Cougar Classic through a dual match at Cog Hill Saturday (Sept. 14) against Horizon League-foe Green Bay. The Flames will then participate in the Cougar Classic at Harborside International Golf Club the following three days (Sept. 15-17).
