HOWLEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Freshman women's golfer Alex Perez shot an opening round 88, pacing the UIC women's golf team on day one of the Horizon League Championship at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., Friday.

Perez was the only UIC player to break 90 on the day. Kayla Stueland shot 91, Elizabeth Curtiss carded a 99, while Cherise Mangal and Lindsay Purpura both shot 100.

"We're a little disappointed in where we are after day one, but we have 36 holes remaining to move up the scoreboard," said head women's golf coach Carol Rhoades. "The course played very difficult today, and our inexperience in this setting played a role in our team score. I'm confident we'll turn things around and play much better golf this weekend."

UIC shot 378 as a team, and enters day two of the Championship in eighth-place, 27 strokes behind seventh-place Valparaiso (351). Defending champion Butler is in first-place, with an opening round team score of 331. The Bulldogs' Clare Cornelius and Detroit's Lindsay Lammers both shot 79, and shared first-place individual honors after Friday's 18-hole round.

The second round, from the El Campeón course at Mission Inn Resort, will get underway Saturday morning.
