April 9, 2012
Kayla Stueland and Casey Hahn all sit among the top-15 individuals at the conclusion of Monday's opening round of the Detroit Titans Invitational at Western Golf & Country Club in Redford, Mich.
In cool, windy and rainy conditions, three Flames broke 90, led by Perez's single-round 86 (41-45) on the par-72, 5,946-yard trek. Stueland (44-45) and Hahn (47-42) both shot 89, and enter Tuesday's final round tied for 12th in the field. Hahn was making her UIC debut after sitting out the fall and much of the spring season with an injury. Cherise Mangal shot 96 to round out UIC's four counted team scores.
"We got off to a slow start today, but I was very pleased with the way we played considering some tough conditions," said head coach Carol Rhoades. "Alex (Perez) and Kayla (Stueland) actually played very well; they just happened to both suffer one bad hole. Casey (Hahn) showed some good things in her first round at UIC. We need to continue to focus on bringing our game to the golf course, and we'll have another opportunity to improve tomorrow."
Oakland University leads the three-team field, with an opening-round 333. Host Detroit shot 336, while UIC turned in a team score of 360 in the first round. The Golden Grizzlies' Elizabeth Ecker was Monday's top individual performer, shooting a six-over par 78 (41-37).
UIC will wrap up action in the Detroit Titans Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
