Women's Golf Concludes Play at Bradley Invitational|
April 6, 2014
PEKIN, Ill. - The UIC women’s golf team concluded action at the Bradley Invitational Sunday in tenth place with a combined score of 676. The Flames matched their Saturday score of 338 and were led by sophomore Caitlan Smollen, who fired a round of 83.
"We were better today in reducing our big number holes," said UIC head coach Carol Rhoades. "The golf course played harder with a cool breeze making flagsticks difficult to access. I am looking forward to a productive week of practice as we prepare for Bowling Green. We have identified our weaknesses and will work on them to prepare for the Horizon League Championship later this month."
Smollen’s round of 83 is the lowest of her spring season. She finished the front nine with a score of 39. Her combined score of 171 placed 50th overall. Smollen had two birdies and 11 pars over the weekend.
Junior Elizabeth Curtiss carded an 84 one day after a round of 79. Her total score of 163 tied her 34th and she was the Flames’ best finisher. Curtiss collected three birdies and 16 pars over the weekend.
Junior Ryann Gilley placed in 49th after a Sunday round of 87. She finished strong with a 40 on the back nine. Gilley had one birdie and 13 pars over the weekend.
Junior Cherise Mangal improved by four shots from Saturday and finished day two with a round of 84. Mangal was a team-best +3 on the Par 3s. Her combined score of 172 finished in 51st place. Junior Kayla Stueland (94) improved by six shots and placed in 56th.
UIC travels to Ohio next weekend (April 11-13) for Bowling Green’s Delores Black Invitational. The Flames have never competed in the event, which will be held at Stone Ridge Golf Club.
