March 13, 2014
LAKE MARY, Fla. – The UIC women’s golf team recorded its lowest round of the week on the final day of competition at Seminole State’s Spring Break Invitational. The Flames concluded the event at Timacuan Golf Club with a round of 338 on Wednesday.
"I am pleased that four players carded their best round of the Spring on the final day of competition," said UIC head coach Carol Rhoades. "We made significant progress today in reducing the number of "other" scores during our round. We recorded a score of higher than bogey on 11 holes which added 19 strokes to our score. This was an improvement but validated our need to improve on our mental management to meet our goal of 320 or less."
Gilley fired an 80, which is the third lowest round of her career. Mangal improved 11 shots from Tuesday’s round with an 81 and sophomore Caitlan Smollen recorded a round of 84, an improvement of nine strokes from Tuesday. Gilley and Mangal were a team-best +5 on the Par 5s.
The Flames are off for three weeks before resuming their spring schedule at the Bradley Invitational. The event is scheduled to take place April 4-6 at Weaver Ridge Golf Club in Peoria, Ill.
