March 9, 2012
Alexandra Perez carded a seven-over-par opening round of 79 Thursday, and sits in a 12th-place tie heading into Friday's final round of the Detroit Sunshine Spring Classic at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
"We had a lot of positives today, and got some of the rust off," said head women's golf coach Carol Rhoades. "Alex (Perez) played very well, and led the team. I expect much better results on Friday - if we improve our collective short game, we'll be in a much better position."
As a team, the Flames finished 10th in the field, with Perez, Stueland, Curtiss and Mangal all finishing the day in the top-50 individually. UIC enters Friday's final round just six strokes behind ninth-place Jackson State, and only 11 strokes short of Valparaiso and IPFW, who are tied for seventh in the field.
