Women's Golf Finishes Seventh in Season Opener

LAKE MARY, Fla. - Sophomore transfer Ryann Gilley shot a two-round total of 179, including a second-round 85, highlighting the UIC women's golf team's performance at the season-opening Magnolia Spring Break Classic at the par-72, 6,083-yard Magnolia Plantation Golf Club Tuesday and Wednesday.

Gilley, a transfer from Southern Illinois, finished the tournament with a 26th-place finish. She shot an opening round 94 on Monday, but followed it up with a 13-over-par 85 in Tuesday's final round. Sophomores Cherise Mangal and Elizabeth Curtiss finished 34th and 35th, respectively, with both significantly improving upon their opening round scores. As a team, the Flames, sliced 20 strokes (362) off their opening round tally (382).

Sophomore Kayla Stueland shot an opening round 94, and followed it up with a 98 on Tuesday. Freshman Caitlan Smollen, making her competitive season debut, shot 98-94 to finish in a 38th place tie.

In the final team standings, UIC (744) finished 16 strokes behind sixth-place Niagara (728). Host Detroit captured the team championship, shooting a two-round team total of 632 (312-320). The Titans' Lindsay Lammers and Christina Thorne both shot 152 for the tournament and shared individual medalist honors.

UIC will return to action Friday, when the Flames compete in a Tri-Meet with Detroit and Niagara. The single-round event will be held at Rio Pinar C.C. in Orlando, Fla.
