Conference Play Begins
The Flames are set to begin its 18th year as a member of the Horizon League as they open play at No. 18/14 Green Bay on Thursday night. UIC and Green Bay currently have the best two records in the league at 7-4 and 10-0, respectively. Last season UIC finished conference play with a 9-9 record and garnered the No. 6 seed in the league tournament. Green Bay ended the conference slate with an untouched 18-0 mark and captured the Horizon League tournament title in a 74-63 win over Butler.
Grand Win For Green
Senior Shamiea Green eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark with her 18 points in last Thursday's win over Eastern Illinois. She is now just the 17th player in program history to surpass the four-digit milestone and sits 15th on the all-time leader board with 1,015 tallies. Teammate Jasmine Bailey accomplished the feat in the first game of the season against Drake.
The Flames are off to one of their best starts in recent program history with a 7-4 record. The last time UIC commenced conference play with seven or more wins was in 2001-02 season, notching nine wins before league action started on Jan 3, 2002. The Flames also currently ride a three-game win streak which is their second of the season. The last time UIC had two three or more wins in a row was in the 2008-09 season.
A League of Her Own
Senior Jasmine Bailey has been dominating the Horizon League stat reports so far this season. Bailey ranks first in scoring (21.7) and in assists (4.5), while ranking second in rebounds (10.0) and steals (2.5). She is the only player in the league who sits in the top 2 in all four categories. Her dual 30-point performances are the top scoring outputs among conference players so far this season.
Nix Grabs Career High
Senior Cree Nix corralled a career-high 15 rebounds in the 66-50 victory over Eastern Illinois on Dec. 22. She tied her previous career-high of 10 rebounds in the first half of that contest and collected a game-high four offensive boards.
Bailey Continues to Scoring Streak
Senior Jasmine Bailey has been a consistent big-time scorer for UIC this season. She currently rides a 14-game double-digit scoring streak which leads all Horizon League players. Of those 14 games, seven have been over 20 points, including back-to-back 30-point performances. Bailey now has 59 double-digit scoring outputs in 101 career games.
UIC has made a commitment to rebounding this season and so far their efforts are showing. The Flames pace the Horizon League in rebounding margin at plus-five and also rank first in offensive boards with 13.9 per game.
Playing Some D
UIC has identified itself as a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end. The Flames rank second in the conference in scoring defense with a 56.9 per game average. UIC holds a 108-81 advantage in steals over their opponents and limits them to a mere 33.1 rebounds per game, ranking second in the league.
Dahnke Plays Santa
Heidi Dahnke and several other Flames' athletes and administrators recently helped spread some Christmas cheer. Dahnke serves as secretary for UIC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) who recently surprised an area single mom and her two-year old son with Christmas gifts. Dahnke and the SAAC raised nearly $600 for the needy family and provided the duo with necessities such as coats, hats and gloves, as books and toys were also donated for the toddler.
Jasmine Bailey continues to move up the UIC leaderboard in the several career statistical categories. The senior ranks eighth in scoring with 1,219 points and fifth in rebounding with 828 boards. Bailey is one of just four players in program history to appear that high in both career scoring and rebounding. She also ranks sixth in steals (209), fifth in made free throws (310), ninth in blocks (66) and ninth in made field goals (441).
Taylor Foulks has been a consistent three-point threat for the Flames the past two seasons and her numbers prove it. The junior has 134 career three pointers which ranks fifth all-time in program annals. Last season she connected on 65 treys which was the fourth highest single-season total in UIC history. Foulks displays no hesitation either as her 424 attempts ranks fifth on the career leaderboard and her 201 shots last season broke a 17-year old UIC record for most three-point attempts in a single season.
Quality Time at the Charity Stripe
A factor to UIC's early season success has been its ability to get to the free throw line. Through 11 games, the Flames are 156-of-230 from the charity strip, ranking second in the Horizon League in made free throws and third in attempts. UIC has made 92 more appearances to the free throw line than their opponents and have made 52 more foul shots.
Top of Their Class
Seniors Jasmine Bailey and Shamiea Green are the active highest career scoring duo in the Horizon League with 2,234 combined points. The pair also has the opportunity to become UIC's highest scoring tandem in program history as the top spot is currently held by LaShonda Grant (2002-06) and Krystal Hugelier (2003-06) who have combined for 2,635 points.
Miller Inks Bender, Grossfeld, Garant and Carpenter
First-year head coach Regina Miller recently signed her first full recruiting class during this season's early signing period. Taking their place on the 2012-13 roster includes Terri Bender (5-7, PG, Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI), Caitlin Garant (6-2, F/C, Chicago, Ill./Bogan), Marissa Grossfeld (5-10, G/F, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Jemia Carpenter (5-10, G, Peoria, Ill./Peoria Central).
